Creating a Pedestrian Streets Program
Background
Research shows that Toronto is behind compared to other cities when it comes to walkability and pedestrian-friendly streets. Rather than create one-off projects and look at possible street closures for pedestrian use in a one-by-one case, this item is proposing that there be a city-wide program that could identify certain streets and close them off temporarily for pedestrian use.

Item Description
The city is to work with other departments such as the police, paramedics, fire services, and Economic Development departments to study traffic, parking, public transit, deliveries, safety, emergency access, costs, and feedback from businesses and residents. They would also look at previous road closures for pedestrian use, such as Church Street and in other cities such as Montreal, to learn from them.
The city is also examining how much it will cost for it to go into effect in 2027 and have some of the different departments report to them in the first quarter of 2027.
